Never Recover Off a Tow Ball, and Never an Unrated Adapter
A tow ball is engineered for one job: carrying a steady, mostly downward and forward load from a trailer coupler. It has no engineering margin for the sudden shock load of a kinetic recovery pull, and its rounded shape has nothing built in to retain a strap loop under tension in the first place.
JACO Superior Products states the failure mode directly: tow balls “are made for vertical pulling, not stretch-and-snap kinetic loads. They shear off and become projectiles.” SlashGear’s reporting on the same hazard lands on the same fix: “[A]lways use the vehicle’s designated recovery points because these are rated and designed to handle pulling forces much better than tow balls.” Even a recovery-gear brand’s own listing copy leads with the same warning: Rhino USA’s product page tells buyers directly to “use a Rhino shackle instead of connecting your tow strap to hitch ball.”
A standard, non-rated hitch pin and a ball-mount adapter fail the same test for the same reason: neither is engineered to retain a strap or shackle under a dynamic recovery load. What makes a hitch-mount setup secure is a load-rated shackle mount seated in the receiver and held by a load-rated pin, never a ball mount and never a bare, unpinned tube.
Use a rated recovery point, never a tow hook or hitch ball. Do not attach a strap or rope to a tow ball or bumper hitch; these are not rated for recovery.
Step-by-Step: Mounting a Rated Shackle to Your Receiver Hitch
Confirm you actually have a rated receiver shackle mount in hand before you start, not a ball mount or an unrated hitch-pin adapter, and confirm it matches your receiver’s class (2-inch Class III/IV or 3-inch Class V; they are not interchangeable).
Insert the rated shackle mount into the receiver tube. Slide the mount fully into your 2-inch (or matching Class V 3-inch) receiver opening. Seat it fully and secure it with the retaining hitch pin, then the clip. This is a load-rated hitch pin, not a standard pin pulled from a ball-mount kit. Side-Loading Is a Shackle’s Weakest Orientation
A bow shackle is built for a straight-line pull.
