Recovery gear stores serious kinetic energy. A failed rope, strap, or shackle can whip back with enough force to injure or kill. Keep everyone clear of the load path, never exceed a component's rated capacity, and follow your gear manufacturer's manual. Where it differs from anything on this page, the manual wins. Warnings first. A recovery under load stores real energy. Stand clear of the line of pull, use a damper on winch line recoveries, never exceed a component’s rated capacity, and never substitute improvised gear (a chain, a tow ball) for rated recovery equipment. Follow your winch and gear manufacturers’ instructions; where anything here differs from your owner’s manual, the manual wins.

Inspection Cadence
- Before every use. Inspect rope, hook, and slings before you operate the winch, every time (WARN).
- After every hard pull. A kinked rope, a strained shackle pin, or heat glazing on a soft shackle knot happens in the moment of the pull; check immediately after, not just at the start of the next trip.
- Daily or before each shift during heavy or extended use. WSTDA’s “frequent inspection” standard: check gear each morning if you’re wheeling multiple days in a row (Ashley Sling).
- A full physical check each season. Feel the length of ropes and straps for stiff spots, check shackle pins for play, and review UV exposure on anything stored outside.
Kinetic Recovery Rope
Kinetic rope is built to stretch, up to roughly 30% elongation, to store energy for a rebound pull on a stuck vehicle (Factor 55). Check the following before every trip. Picks by budget: our best kinetic recovery rope guide.
- Any fraying or cut fibers anywhere on the rope. No partial credit here; retire it.
- Permanent elongation. A kinetic rope that no longer snaps back to something close to its original length has been overstressed internally, even if the surface looks fine.
- Stiff sections. Flex the rope along its length by hand. Stiff spots that don’t move like the rest of the rope indicate internal fiber damage you can’t see from outside.
Tow / Recovery Strap
Recovery and tow straps have minimal stretch, in the 5-10% range, and are built for steady towing loads rather than energy-storing snatch recoveries (Factor 55). The fray and stiffness checks above apply here too, plus these strap-specific criteria drawn from the WSTDA web-sling standard, an industrial standard that governs synthetic slings structurally similar to a recovery strap:
- Holes, tears, cuts, or snags anywhere in the webbing. Automatic removal condition (WSTDA, via Ashley Sling).
- Broken or worn stitching in a load-bearing seam, or excessive abrasive wear. Immediate removal.
- Discoloration, or brittle and stiff patches. Signals chemical or UV damage.
- Check the material tag, not just visible wear. Nylon webbing is more UV-susceptible than polyester; even a strap that’s never been used degrades from UV and oxidative aging just sitting in storage (SZ Onier Webbing).
Soft Shackle
Soft shackles are UHMWPE fiber (commonly branded Dyneema) tied into a load-bearing knot, and that knot is both the connection point and the first thing to fail. There’s no field repair for a damaged fiber shackle on any of the criteria below. Comparison reading: soft shackle vs. hard shackle and best soft shackles.
- Sinking crown or rising wall. If any of the four crowns sinks so its peak sits one to two rope diameters lower than the others, or a wall rises above the halfway point of the knot and threatens to slide over a crown, the shackle must be retired (Samson Rope). This guidance comes from Samson Rope’s inspection document for an analogous UHMWPE product, not a dedicated soft-shackle-brand spec; treat the mechanism as sound engineering logic that carries over.
- Any cut or fray. Cut means retired; there’s no field repair for fiber damage.
- Chalky texture or stiffness. Signs of UV degradation in the fiber; retire immediately (Engineer Fix).
- Heat glazing near the knot or the section that rode through the recovery point. UHMWPE fiber has a melting point around 144-152°C and is only rated for sustained use up to about 70°C (FibrXL). Friction at a recovery point during a hard pull can generate enough localized heat to glaze or weaken the fiber without an obvious cut.
Hard / Steel Shackle

- 10% wear on the original diameter. Replace a shackle once wear at any point exceeds 10% of its original material diameter (CCOHS).
- Bent shackles, out. Any visible bend in the body or pin is a replace condition, full stop.
- Elongated eye or pin holes. Stretching at the pin holes changes the geometry the rating was built for.
- Illegible markings. If you can’t read the manufacturer name, WLL, or serial number anymore, you can’t verify what you’re trusting your rig to; replace it.
- A repaired shackle, without professional-engineer certification. Don’t use it. A shackle with a weld or a bent-and-straightened bow, absent that certification, doesn’t go back in the kit.
- Corrosion check. Light surface rust alone isn’t automatically a removal condition, but pitting or a pin that won’t thread or move freely is. Wipe the rust off and check underneath before you trust it.
Synthetic Winch Line
WARN is direct on this: inspect your winch rope, hook, and slings before every operation, and any frayed, kinked, or damaged rope gets replaced before you run the winch again (WARN Winch Rope FAQ). Full tradeoff detail: our synthetic winch rope vs. steel cable comparison.
- 25% strand volume reduction from abrasion. If a section of rope has visibly lost about a quarter of its material to surface wear, retire it (WARN).
- Two adjacent cut strands. Cuts next to each other compound the strength loss in that section; replace the rope.
- The “haircut” test. Once the rope looks shaggy, “like it needs a haircut,” with lots of small frays throughout, that’s accumulated abrasion damage.
- A sliced line. WARN draws a specific distinction here: a sliced line (a clean cut) should always be replaced, not field-repaired, separate from a broken strand.
- All 12 strands intact, on a 12-strand line. Master Pull’s own maintenance guidance requires every strand present; fewer than the full count is a structural retirement condition (Master Pull).
- UV-faded, chalky, or “crunchy” rope, or any section that looks melted or glazed. Retirement signs Factor 55 flags directly (Factor 55).
- Check the hawse fairlead too. Nicks or abrasion on the fairlead can cut the rope on future pulls even if the rope itself is currently fine.
Steel Winch Cable
This category has been thin on our site until now. Steel winch cable inherits its clearest numeric criteria from OSHA’s crane and derrick wire rope standard: 29 CFR 1926.1413 governs running wire rope on cranes and derricks, not winch line directly, but the inspection habit and the physical damage modes transfer directly.
- Category I, immediate removal: kinking, crushing, unstranding, birdcaging, core failure, or steel-core protrusion. (OSHA 1926.1413(a)(2)(i))
- Category I, immediate removal: significant corrosion, or electric-arc or heat damage.
- Category II: six randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, or three broken wires in one strand in one rope lay.
- Category II: a diameter reduction of more than 5% from nominal diameter.
- Damaged, frayed, kinked, crushed, heavily rusted, or corroded cable. Replace before use; steel specifically should be watched for crushing, kinking, heavy rust, or corrosion (WARN).
- Inspection cadence. A pre-use inspection every time, plus a documented periodic inspection at least every 12 months (OSHA wire rope sling guidance).
One distinction worth keeping straight: 1926.1413 is a different numeric standard than the ASME B30.9 wire rope sling criteria cited elsewhere on this site (10 broken wires in one lay, or 5 in one strand); they govern different equipment and shouldn’t be blended into a single “OSHA says” claim. Traction Boards
Traction boards hadn’t had a dedicated condition-inspection section on this site before this page, and they wear in ways that aren’t always obvious at a glance. - Teeth missing more than 20% of their count. Past its useful life on aggressive terrain (JACO Superior Products).
- Teeth burned, melted, or broken from wheel spin. MAXTRAX’s own warranty page documents this as a real, recognized damage mode, and explicitly excludes it from warranty coverage as operator error rather than a manufacturing fault (MAXTRAX USA).
- The board flexes excessively under a heavier vehicle. A failure mode that can develop in any reinforced-nylon board under sustained wheel spin (JACO).
- Storage condition. Hose off after every recovery (dried mud and sand grind teeth down on the next deployment), let dry before storing (trapped moisture rusts metal hardware), and store out of direct sun (UV degrades all plastics over time) (JACO).
After a Hard Pull
Every recovery puts stress on your gear, and a hard pull is exactly the moment damage is most likely to have just occurred. Run this in addition to whichever gear-type checklist above applies, immediately after the pull, not at the start of your next trip (BM Off-Road):
- Winch cables and synthetic ropes. Check for kinks, frays, and abrasion introduced by that specific pull.
- Shackles and D-rings. Check for rust, cracks, or weak threads, and confirm the pin still moves freely.
- Soft shackles specifically. Pay close attention to the area around the knot and the section that passed through the recovery point; that’s where friction-generated heat damage shows up first, and it’s not always visible without a close look (Engineer Fix).
When to call a professional instead of self-recovering: rollovers, a vehicle on an unstable slope, water recoveries, a visibly damaged recovery point, or any pull where you’re not confident calculating the load and rigging. Walking away from a recovery you’re not sure about is a better outcome than a piece of gear failing under load.
