The One Explicit Prohibition
Start with the rule that a manufacturer actually publishes, because there is exactly one and it is unambiguous.
WARN, writing about the difference between its products:
The no-no with recovery straps is using them with a winch. Do not ever use a recovery strap with a winch due to this before-mentioned elasticity.
That is the whole safety case in two sentences. A recovery strap in WARN’s sense is the elastic one, built to stretch and snap back. A winch pull is slow and controlled, has no use for stored energy, and a winch line is not designed to absorb its release.
Everything else on this page exists because the word “recovery strap” in that sentence does not map onto the words printed on the products in your garage.
Why the Label Cannot Be Trusted
Here is the trap, in one manufacturer’s own copy.

So a strap labelled “tow strap” is, in that case, the correct thing to put on a winch line. The same company then warns:

Read those together and the picture inverts. “Tow strap” is not the stretchy category. It is a name that gets applied to both a low-stretch polyester strap and, elsewhere in the market, to something that stretches — which is precisely why sorting your gear by name is unsafe.

Material Is Not the Shortcut It Looks Like
The tempting rule is polyester equals low stretch, nylon equals high stretch. As a general property that direction is right, and an industrial rigging supplier publishes the numbers: roughly 3 percent stretch for a polyester web sling at rated capacity, against 8 to 10 percent for nylon.
But WARN’s own tree trunk protector — the strap you rig a winch line to an anchor with — is described on that same WARN page as:
made of nylon webbing
and, a few lines later:
These are non-elastic straps that are made to handle the high capacity of winch pulling.
Nylon, and non-elastic, from the same manufacturer publishing the prohibition. Weave, ply count and heat treatment move stretch as much as the fibre family does. Read the product’s own stretch figure. Do not infer it from the material.

The kinetic band is far away from everything else, which is what makes the behavioural sort reliable even when the naming is not.
One product sits in the middle and is worth naming rather than tidying away. Rhino USA’s tree saver is a poly-silk blend at about 8 percent, and its own page tells you it is not to be used in the same way as kinetic ropes. That is not a kinetic rope, and it is not a true zero-stretch line either — which is the whole argument for reading the number instead of the name.
What Nobody Publishes
Two gaps, stated rather than filled.
No manufacturer checked here publishes the reverse warning. WARN says do not put an elastic strap on a winch. Nobody found says, in as many words, do not use a kinetic rope as a winch extension. That was searched for specifically across kinetic-product pages from several makers. The physics is the same in both directions, but the published instruction runs one way only.
ARB gives hardware guidance for the join, and it is a prohibition. Its recovery guide states that where length is insufficient, “two straps may be joined using the correct method” and then rules out the obvious hardware: “Never join snatch straps with a bow shackle.” ARB also covers the extension rig itself, instructing that a recovery damper be used on it. Beyond ARB, Master Pull designs its extension with large soft eyes and heavy duty chafe protection so it will take any size shackle or hook, but that is a product description, not instructions. Whether to use a soft shackle rather than steel at that connection, and whether to hang a damper on it, is answered by enthusiast sources rather than by the companies that build the gear.
One thing this page deliberately does not tell you. A mechanism circulates explaining that stretch preloads the winch rigging and increases recoil if something fails. It is plausible, and it could not be confirmed against any source that would open, so it is left out rather than repeated with borrowed authority.

Do not sort your straps by the word on the label. Sort them by the stretch figure the maker publishes, and if a strap publishes neither a stretch figure nor an intended use, treat that as missing information rather than as permission.
If it advertises stretch as a feature, it is for snatch recoveries between two vehicles and never for a winch. If it advertises low stretch or non-elasticity, it is the family that extends a winch line or wraps an anchor.
