How to Weigh Your Truck for Recovery Gear Sizing (and When You Don't Need To)

Recovery gear stores serious kinetic energy. A failed rope, strap, or shackle can whip back with enough force to injure or kill. Keep everyone clear of the load path, never exceed a component's rated capacity, and follow your gear manufacturer's manual. Where it differs from anything on this page, the manual wins. This article is spec-and-evidence analysis, not field instruction from a certified instructor. If you're not confident rigging the pull safely, that's a reason to call someone who is, not a reason to guess.

Follow your gear’s own manufacturer instructions first. Where a manufacturer’s sizing guidance differs from anything here, theirs governs. Undersized recovery gear fails under load, and a failure under tension can kill.
Which Rules Need a Scale and Which Do Not

That split is the whole reason this page exists. WARN’s rule is deliberately built on a number you already have: it works off GVWR, and GVWR is stamped on a label in your driver’s door opening. Nothing to measure.
ARB’s US rule is not. Its wording is specific: a snatch strap should carry “a minimum breaking strength (MBS) between two and three times the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your rig.” ARB spells the term out rather than abbreviating, and GVW is not GVWR. Its Australian page uses a different basis entirely, covered in the next section. Bubba Rope’s kinetic-rope guidance is likewise tied to actual weight, telling you to “multiply the weight of the vehicle you are recovering by 3 or 4 times.”
One more wrinkle worth knowing before you buy a strap: ARB ties the figure to “the GVW of the lighter of the two vehicles involved in the recovery process,” not to whichever truck happens to be yours.
ARB Publishes This Rule on Two Different Bases
Worth stopping on, because it is the single most confusing thing in strap sizing and it is not a misprint on anyone’s part.
ARB’s US page states the rule as “a minimum breaking strength (MBS) between two and three times the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your rig.” ARB’s Australian page states it as “a minimum breaking strength (MBS) of between two to three times the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM).”
Same multiplier. Different quantity. Australian road-transport law defines GVM as the maximum loaded mass specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer — which makes it the structural equivalent of the US GVWR, a rating, not a weighing. GVW is the truck as it actually sits.
So a reader following ARB Australia sizes off a placard number and never touches a scale; a reader following ARB US sizes off an actual weight. This site cites both pages in different articles, and both citations are accurate to their own source. We are not picking one as correct — ARB publishes both. What matters is knowing which basis you are on before you multiply, because for a truck loaded well under its ceiling the two produce meaningfully different straps.
ARB’s Australian page also notes what to do when the number is not to hand: “If the GVM is not stated on the identification plate or registration certificate of a vehicle, it could be available from the owners handbook, or consult the vehicle manufacturer.”
Why GVWR Is Not Your Truck’s Weight
GVWR is a ceiling. 49 CFR 571.3 defines it as “the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle” — the most the vehicle is rated to weigh with everything in it.
A half-ton pickup with a driver, a toolbox and half a tank is nowhere near that ceiling. So when you size a strap off GVWR instead of GVW, you are sizing for a truck loaded to its legal maximum rather than the truck you actually drive. That direction of error over-specs the strap rather than leaving you short, which is why it tends to go unnoticed — but it is not the rule ARB published, and on kinetic rope specifically, oversizing has its own consequences that can a kinetic rope be too big works through.
GVW, by contrast, has no standalone federal definition the way GVWR does. It is industry usage for what the vehicle weighs right now, fully loaded, as read off a scale. That absence of a formal definition is part of why the two terms get swapped so freely.
What Your Door Jamb Actually Gives You
There are two separate federally-required labels in that door opening, and people routinely treat them as one.
The Certification label (49 CFR 567.4) must carry the GVWR, the GAWR for each axle, the manufacturer’s name, the month and year of manufacture, the VIN, and the vehicle type classification. It has to be riveted or permanently affixed “in such a manner that it cannot be removed without destroying or defacing it,” on the hinge pillar, door-latch post, or the door edge meeting that post.
The Tire and Loading Information placard (FMVSS 110) carries the cargo-capacity sentence, in federally-specified wording: “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds.”
Neither label is required to print curb weight, and neither does. That is the gap this page is about: the regulations guarantee you a ceiling and a payload allowance, never the weight of the truck itself. Deriving a Number Without a Scale, and How Wrong It Can Be
The obvious shortcut is arithmetic: payload capacity is defined as GVWR minus curb weight, so GVWR minus the placard payload figure should hand you curb weight back.
In principle that holds. In practice it gives you an estimate, and there is primary-source evidence of how far off it can land.
NHTSA’s Part 573 defect report for recall 23C18 found that payload values on the label “may be overstated by 1 – 156 pounds on certain units, depending on the option content,” because accessories installed by dealers or mod centers — auxiliary lights, box extenders, splash guards, toolboxes, bedliners — were never included in the payload calculation. The same report notes that NHTSA’s own tested Bronco “weighed eleven (11) pounds heavier than Ford’s internal system estimated,” which Ford attributed to production variability, adding that “some vehicles may exceed their estimated curb weight.”
So the placard figure is the manufacturer’s engineering estimate for that build configuration at certification time. It is not a measurement of your specific truck, and a documented error range of up to 156 lb exists for an OEM’s own numbers on its own vehicles.
It is also worth remembering what published curb weight excludes: the base vehicle with standard equipment and fluids, without passengers, cargo, or anything you bolted on afterward. A steel bumper, a winch, a drawer system and a full water tank are all invisible to it. DECKED, for one, publishes its full-size drawer systems at 208 lb for a short bed and 233 lb for standard and 8-foot beds, with midsize versions at 177 and 204 lb. Water is heavier than most people estimate: USGS measured a gallon of 70°F tap water at 8.329 lb.
Getting an Actual Weight
A CAT Scale ticket is the common answer, and it is worth knowing exactly what it does and does not give you. CAT Scale states that its scales “can give you axle weights and a total gross weight, however, they cannot weigh each corner of the vehicle.” The scales weigh vehicles between 2,000 lb and 200,000 lb, so an unusually light rig can sit under the floor. Tickets “can not be altered or edited in any way after they have been printed, as they are legal documents.”
Certified public scales exist well outside the truck-stop network. Sand and gravel pits, scrap and recycling yards, landfills, concrete plants, grain elevators and some moving companies operate scales certified for use in commerce. Access, hours and fees are set per site, so call ahead rather than driving out on an assumption.
Do not assume a state weigh station will do it. Practice varies. Oregon’s DOT states plainly that “ODOT cannot ‘certify’ weights for public vehicles” and points people to a private or public scale for a certified receipt instead. That is Oregon’s policy, not a national rule, and this page does not extend it to other states without checking them.
Portable wheel-load pads are a real product category rather than an improvisation — Intercomp, an established scale manufacturer, publishes individual pad capacities in the 10,000 to 25,000 lb range at roughly 40 lb per pad. They are built and priced for commercial and enforcement use, so for a one-off weighing of a personal truck they are rarely the practical answer.
The Honest Summary
If you are sizing a winch, you already have your number: read GVWR off the certification label and multiply by 1.5. Nothing else required.
If you are sizing a snatch strap or a kinetic rope, the published rules want the truck’s actual weight, and there are only two honest ways to get it. Weigh it, which gives you a real number. Or derive it from GVWR minus payload, which gives you an estimate that NHTSA’s own recall documentation shows can be off by over a hundred pounds before you have bolted anything on.
Neither approach is wrong. The mistake is not knowing which one you used, then treating an estimate as a measurement when you pick a strap.
What This Page Could Not Confirm
Stated plainly, because the gaps matter as much as the figures:
- Current CAT Scale pricing. The figures published on catscale.com sit inside California-tagged FAQ entries, so this page does not print a dollar amount rather than present a possibly region-specific rate as national. Check catscale.com directly.
- Manufacturer-published weights for a winch, a steel bumper, or a roof rack. WARN’s own product spec table for the ZEON 10-S lists cable, voltage, mount type and rated line pull but no weight; two ARB store bumper pages showed no weight field; a Front Runner rack URL 404’d. Third-party retailer figures exist, but this site does not publish a load-relevant spec sourced to a retailer.
- Fuel weight per gallon. Commonly cited as roughly 6.1 lb for gasoline and 7.1 for diesel, but the Department of Energy’s own fuel-properties chart publishes energy content, not density, and the ASTM standards behind those numbers are paywalled. No figure appears above for that reason.
- Whether any manufacturer explicitly says “size on actual weight, not GVWR.” None of the three researched says it in those words. What they do is use actual-weight language while WARN uses GVWR, which is an observation about their published wording rather than a recommendation any of them makes.

Do I actually need to weigh my truck to size recovery gear?
