This page collects what each manufacturer actually publishes for its own rope, one row per product, with every figure linked to the page it came from, and it shows the places where two brands put materially different numbers on the same nominal diameter rather than blending them into a single average that belongs to nobody.

This chart covers winch rope (winch line) only, not kinetic recovery rope. A winch line is a static, 12-strand HMPE/Dyneema/UHMWPE rope built to hold a steady, controlled load while spooled on a winch drum. A kinetic recovery rope is a different product entirely, typically nylon double-braid, engineered to stretch 20 to 30 percent and store energy for a snatch-style pull. The two use different diameters, different breaking strengths, and different manufacturers publish different numbers for each. Where a source mixed the two, this page separated them; nowhere below does a kinetic-rope figure appear in the winch-line chart. How the Numbers Below Are Labeled
Every figure in the chart is a manufacturer-published number, not something this site tested or calculated. That still leaves real differences in how confidently each number is known, so each row below is checked against three questions: Does the manufacturer call this a breaking strength, or a different term (a rating, a capacity, a tensile strength)? Is the figure sitting in real, searchable text, or only inside an image or graphic? And does the same manufacturer say something different about the same product somewhere else on its own page? Two brands in this research (WARN and Smittybilt) failed that third check in a way worth flagging before the chart, covered in its own section below the table.
The Diameter-to-Breaking-Strength Chart
Sorted by nominal diameter. Every figure below is manufacturer-published text, confirmed readable on the live product page, not pulled from a graphic or a search-result summary.
A sourcing note on two rows: Samson’s AmSteel-Blue table sits on a page titled “High-Strength Synthetic Winch Rope,” but the table itself is headed “SPECIFICATIONS - MEG4 MAINLINES,” a marine mooring-line standard, not a winch-specific one. That’s a genuine format nuance worth knowing rather than blurring; the numbers match Master Pull’s own independently published AmSteel-Blue column exactly, which is a real cross-check between two manufacturer-sourced tables, not one source repeated twice. And WARN Spydura Nightline’s 18,000 lb figure is reused from this site’s existing synthetic winch line vs. steel cable comparison instead of independently re-fetched during this research pass; it was not re-verified against warn.com this session, so treat it with slightly less certainty than the other WARN rows in this table, which were checked live.
WARN’s Own Pages Contradict Themselves
This is worth stopping on before you use the WARN rows above. Both WARN Spydura pages carry a plain-English prose bullet stating a breaking strength, and both pages also carry a separate structured “Specifications” table further down the same page, and the two don’t agree.
On the base Spydura page, the prose states “minimum straight line breaking strength of 16,600 lbs.” The structured specifications table on that same page has a field reading “BREAKING STRENGTH (LB): 10,000 Pounds,” a different, lower number under the same label. On the Spydura Pro page, the prose states “minimum straight line breaking strength of 24,000 lbs” and separately says the rope suits “winches with capacities up to 16,500 lbs,” but the structured specifications table doesn’t repeat 24,000 anywhere; instead it carries a “WEIGHT CAPACITY (LB): 12,000 Pounds” field, a different kind of number entirely (a winch-capacity match, not a rope breaking strength) with no breaking-strength field alongside it.
This page reports the prose figures (16,600 lbs and 24,000 lbs) as WARN’s stated breaking strength, the same figures already published on this site’s synthetic vs. steel comparison, because that’s the explicit “breaking strength” language on WARN’s own page. But a reader or a scraper pulling only the structured table would land on a different, unreconciled number. Neither this page nor WARN’s own site explains the gap; it’s reported here as a real, unresolved contradiction on WARN’s own product pages, not smoothed over.
Why the Same Nominal Diameter Reports Different Numbers
Diameter alone doesn’t set a rope’s strength. Master Pull’s own published comparison of synthetic winch lines names the two things that actually do: fiber type (Dyneema SK75 vs. the lower-grade SK60, Technora, Vectran, or Spectra) and processing (Master Pull describes its Superline as “pre-stretched and heat set,” which increases density and breaking strength over an open-weave construction at the same diameter).
The proof is inside Master Pull’s own product line, not a cross-brand argument: at the identical 3/8 in nominal diameter, Master Pull’s Basic line is rated 17,600 lbs and its Superline is rated 23,900 lbs, a 36 percent jump from construction and fiber grade alone, same company, same diameter, same measurement method.
And there is a step below fiber grade that undercuts the whole chart: the nominal label itself is not a fixed dimension. Master Pull sells a 9mm rope and a 10mm rope, and markets both under the same “3/8 inch” heading — 3/8 of an inch is 9.525mm, so one is slightly under the nominal and the other slightly over. A reader comparing two “3/8 inch” ropes may be comparing two genuinely different diameters before any question of fiber or coating arises. Re-verified on Master Pull’s own product pages, 2026-07-31.
Where Manufacturers Disagree at the Same Diameter
At 3/8 in, the widest and best-documented size in this research, published figures span roughly 13,000 to 24,000 lbs: Rhino USA states 13,000 lbs, WARN Spydura states 16,600 lbs, Yankum states 17,500 lbs MTS, Master Pull Basic states 17,600 lbs, Samson AmSteel-Blue states a 17,600 lb minimum, WARN Spydura Nightline states 18,000 lbs, Master Pull Superline XD states 21,700 lbs, Master Pull Superline states 23,900 lbs, and WARN Spydura Pro states 24,000 lbs. Nine manufacturer-published figures, one nominal diameter, a roughly 11,000 lb spread. Smittybilt doesn’t sell a 3/8 in size in this lineup (its nearest size is 25/64 in), so it isn’t part of this specific comparison, but see its own ambiguous-labeling section below.
At 1/4 in, the spread is nearly 3x: Rhino USA states 5,000 lbs, Master Pull Basic states 7,700 lbs, Samson AmSteel-Blue states a 7,700 lb minimum, Yankum states 8,000 lbs MTS, and Master Pull Superline states 14,960 lbs.
At 7/16 in, Yankum’s 21,500 lbs and Samson AmSteel-Blue’s 21,500 lb minimum agree exactly, an independent cross-manufacturer match on this specific diameter. Master Pull’s own Superline jumps well past both at 36,500 lbs, the largest single figure in this entire chart at any diameter, and it’s Master Pull’s own top-tier construction driving that gap, not a diameter effect.
None of this means one manufacturer is wrong and another is right. It means “3/8 in synthetic winch rope” isn’t one product; it’s a diameter that several different constructions happen to share, and the diameter alone tells you nothing about which one you’re buying.
Working Load Limit vs. Minimum Breaking Strength
Every figure in the chart above is a minimum breaking strength (MBS) or its Yankum-labeled equivalent (MTS), not a working load limit (WLL). MBS is the load at which the rope is expected to fail; WLL is the load it’s rated for in normal, repeated use, and it should sit well below MBS. Most manufacturers checked for this page (WARN, Yankum, Master Pull, Samson, Smittybilt, Bubba Rope, ARB, Superwinch) publish only MBS, or an ambiguous “rating,” for their winch rope, with no separate WLL figure at all.
Rhino USA is the one exception in this research: it publishes both numbers for the same product, on the same page. Its 3/8 in x 94 ft rope carries a stated 13,000 lb max break strength against a 4,333 lb working load limit, and its 1/4 in x 50 ft rope carries a 5,000 lb min break strength against a 1,666 lb working load limit. Divide either pair out and the ratio is a consistent 3:1 across both sizes, a real, sourced design factor rather than a coincidence of rounding. Worth noting: Rhino USA’s own page calls the larger rope’s figure “MAX BREAK STRENGTH” and the smaller rope’s figure “MIN. BREAK STRENGTH,” different terms for what should be the same kind of measurement on the same product line. That’s Rhino USA’s own inconsistent labeling, reported here instead of silently normalized to one term. Manufacturers With No Published Winch-Rope Breaking Strength
Four manufacturers commonly named alongside winch rope publish no diameter-to-breaking-strength figure for it anywhere on their own sites, confirmed by checking the actual product pages, not by trusting a search-engine summary:
Bubba Rope. Its winch line product pages (100 ft and 50 ft listings) list only a “Suggested Winch Size” (9,000-10,000 lbs), a winch-capacity recommendation, not a rope breaking strength. A full-page scan for the word “break” across those pages returns zero matches. Bubba Rope’s separate “Winch Line Engineering Specs” graphic on its category page is an image, not extractable text, and doesn’t carry an MBS number even visually. A “3/8 in Bubba Rope winch line = 17,000 lbs” figure appears repeated across retailer and blog listings, but it is not published anywhere on bubbarope.com; treat that figure as unverified against the manufacturer, not as a Bubba Rope spec. (Bubba Rope does publish a full, well-sourced MBS chart for its kinetic recovery rope, covered on this site’s 7/8 in vs. 1 in kinetic rope page; that’s a different product line from the winch rope discussed here, and the two shouldn’t be confused just because they share a brand name.)
ARB. ARB does not sell winch rope as a standalone product with its own spec sheet. Its synthetic rope ships pre-installed on a complete winch, and the winch’s own specifications accordion lists color, a Prop 65 notice, housing material, and warranty terms, with no rope diameter and no breaking strength anywhere on the page.
Superwinch. Checked across its individual replacement-rope pages (1/4 in and 3/8 in) and a complete winch listing. None publish a rope breaking strength; the closest figure is the winch’s own “Rated Line Pull,” which describes the winch’s pulling capacity, not the rope’s failure point. A commonly repeated “average 8,600 lbs / minimum 7,700 lbs” figure for Superwinch’s 1/4 in rope does not appear on superwinch.com; it’s identical to Samson AmSteel-Blue’s 1/4 in figures in this page’s own chart above, which suggests it’s a generic-fiber citation that migrated into search results rather than a Superwinch-published number.
Factor 55. Factor 55 manufactures hardware (shackles, links, recovery-point accessories) and short splice-repair rope spools, not bulk winch line sold by the foot. Its MBS and WLL figures that surface in search results describe accessory capacity (for example, a pulley’s rated capacity for a compatible rope diameter range), not a Factor 55 winch-rope breaking strength, and shouldn’t be cited as if they were one.
Smittybilt: A Number That Isn’t Clearly MBS
Smittybilt publishes a diameter and a number for three winch rope products (8,000 lbs at 11/32 in, 10,000 lbs at 25/64 in, 12,000 lbs at 7/16 in), but never uses the words “breaking strength” or “MBS” on any of those three product pages, confirmed by reading the full page text for each. The number is presented only as “X lb. rating,” language that reads like a compatible-winch-capacity match, the same pattern WARN’s own “WEIGHT CAPACITY” field uses, not a stated rope MBS. This page includes Smittybilt’s numbers in the chart above because they’re the only figures Smittybilt publishes for these products, but they carry a real ambiguity that Yankum’s “MTS,” Rhino USA’s “MAX BREAK STRENGTH,” and WARN’s “minimum straight line breaking strength” don’t: none of them tell you plainly whether the number is a strength rating or a compatibility label.
Rope Diameter, Winch Capacity, and Why Bigger Isn’t Automatically Safer
Master Pull’s own sizing guidance states winch line breaking strength should run 1.5:1 to 2:1 relative to the winch’s rated pulling capacity. On a 9,000 lb winch, that means rope rated 13,500-18,000 lbs or more, a range several of the 3/8 in figures in this page’s chart clear and a few don’t.
Winch rated capacity itself isn’t a flat number either: WARN’s own published guidance states pulling capacity drops roughly 15 percent per layer as rope stacks on the drum, so a winch is only rated for its full pull on the innermost layer. That interacts with rope sizing in a way a diameter chart alone can’t show you: the rope’s own breaking strength doesn’t change layer to layer, but the winch’s actual available pull does, and sizing the rope off the winch’s badge number alone ignores that the badge number and the winch’s real mid-spool pulling power aren’t the same thing. What This Chart Cannot Tell You
Every number above describes a new rope, as published by its manufacturer, under that manufacturer’s own test conditions. It cannot tell you the condition of the specific rope currently on your winch. UV exposure, abrasion, cut strands, and glazing all reduce a rope’s real strength below its printed rating, sometimes substantially, and there’s no way to read that degradation off a chart like this one. Sizing a real pull off a manufacturer chart instead of your own rope’s tag, its specific manual, and a pre-use visual inspection is the mistake this page exists to help you avoid, not repeat. Where a manufacturer’s own pages disagreed with themselves (WARN’s prose-vs-specifications-table gap) or used ambiguous language (Smittybilt’s “lb. rating”), that’s stated plainly in its own section above rather than resolved by picking whichever number looked cleaner. Two widely repeated figures, a “3/8 in Bubba Rope = 17,000 lbs” number and a Superwinch 1/4 in “average 8,600 / minimum 7,700 lbs” figure, were checked directly against their named manufacturer’s own site and found absent from it; both are flagged as unverified in the sections above instead of folded into the chart as if they were sourced.
