ComeUp states it twice: "The voltage drop for the winch motor must not exceed 10% of the nominal voltage" — 1.2 V on a 12 V system. The 0.2 V and 0.5 V figures usually quoted are starter-circuit numbers from automotive sources, not winch specs.
- WARN and Superwinch independently warn about the same wrench mistake at the terminals. Superwinch: "CAUTION Always use 2 wrenches (spanners)". WARN: "Do not let bottom nut or stud turn while tightening."
Two winch manufacturers publish an answer for this exact symptom, and they disagree about where to look first. That disagreement is more useful than either answer alone, because it tells you the confident single explanation you found in a forum thread is one manufacturer’s ordering presented as physics.
Safety First, Because This Test Energises a Live Circuit
Before anything below: confirm there is no load on the winch. Superwinch’s General Safety item 17 states it in capitals:
“NEVER RELEASE FREESPOOL CLUTCH WHEN THERE IS A LOAD ON THE WINCH.”
Every test on this page involves disengaging the clutch or hand-energising a motor circuit. With a loaded drum, releasing the clutch lets the line run out under that load.
Once the line is slack, three things apply:
- Disengage the clutch before testing. Superwinch: “CAUTION Disengage clutch before performing this test to prevent powering the wire rope drum.” KFI runs its entire contactor procedure with the winch in freespool for the same reason.
- Know which terminal you are energising, because the two published procedures differ. A solenoid or contactor carries large studs at battery and motor potential, plus one or two much smaller coil terminals. Superwinch, Ramsey, Champion and Rough Country all energise the small coil terminal and never a large stud. KFI’s procedure is the exception: it uses the contactor’s own red post — the large battery-positive stud, the same one its step 2 uses to measure battery voltage — as the 12 V source. That is a live, unfused, direct-from-battery connection, so keep tools, rings and watch straps clear of the adjacent studs; a slip bridging two of them is a dead short across the battery.
- Hold the lower nut when you touch the terminals. Superwinch: “CAUTION Always use 2 wrenches (spanners)”. WARN puts the same point in its own words: “Do not let bottom nut or stud turn while tightening.”

WARN Names the Symptom and Starts With Ground
WARN’s service guide for its ATV and Utility winches has a numbered entry for precisely this:
“5.1.6 When remote control switch is activated, only a “clicking sound” results and winch does not operate in either power-in or power-out mode.“
Its five causes, in WARN’s order:
- Faulty electrical grounding — routed to 5.1.4, whose corrective action is “Attach ground cable to negative battery terminal”
- Faulty battery, battery cable or battery cable connections
- Water in motor, from submersion or improper installation — “Replace motor”
- One of the solenoids or contactor in the control pack is sticking or is damaged from prolonged use — “Replace solenoid or contactor”
- Worn or damaged brushes caused by a damaged armature commutator or normal wear — “Replace motor”
Note that WARN keeps a sticking solenoid on the list even though the winch is clicking, and places it fourth.
Superwinch Lists the Same Failure and Ends With Ground
Superwinch’s chart covers this under “Motor will not operate or runs in one direction only” — one row where WARN uses two, since WARN handles one-direction-only separately at §5.1.8 and orders that differently again, with a damaged remote control switch first. Superwinch’s five causes for the merged row run in the opposite priority to WARN’s §5.1.6:
- Damaged or stuck solenoid
- Switch inoperative
- Broken wires or bad connection
- Damaged motor
- Solenoids not grounded — “Check the ground path between battery negative and solenoid base”
So grounding is WARN’s first suspect and Superwinch’s last, for a failure both describe. Neither ordering is wrong. They are different products with different wiring conventions. What it should do is stop you treating any single walkthrough as settled.
The Click Is a Pass Condition
Superwinch’s corrective action for its cause 1 reads, in full and in this order:
“CAUTION Disengage clutch before performing this test to prevent powering the wire rope drum. If a solenoid sticks once, it is likely to stick again and must be replaced immediately. Tap solenoid to free stuck contacts. Check by applying voltage to the small solenoid terminal. Be sure solenoid is grounded back to source. A solenoid that is not stuck will make an audible “click” when first energized.“
Two things in there get dropped almost everywhere this test is repeated. The caution is one. The other is the sentence in the middle: a solenoid you freed by tapping is not repaired. Superwinch’s instruction is to replace it.
Ramsey publishes the same test — “Check solenoid by applying +12 volts to coil terminal (it should make an audible click when energized)” — and Champion words it as “Tap contactor to loosen contacts. Apply 12 volts to coil terminals directly. A clicking indicates proper activation.”
What the click does not prove is that the high-current contacts are passing motor current, because the coil and the contacts are separate circuits in the same part. We could not find a component manufacturer stating that failure mode in its own words — attempts at TE Connectivity, Omron, Littelfuse and Trombetta documentation were blocked or did not address it — so the clearest available statement is from an automotive-repair publisher rather than a parts maker: “a click only proves the coil is moving the armature. It does not prove the load contacts are passing current well enough to run the component.”
What the Click Rules Out, and For Which Equipment
One manufacturer says this explicitly, and its equipment class matters.
Dutton-Lainson writes about its SA-series 12 volt trailer and utility winches — an internal relay pair and a wired pendant switch, not a vehicle recovery winch’s external solenoid pack:
“You should be able to hear a click noise as each relay is activated, one for the IN direction and the other for the OUT direction. If you can hear the relays clicking, then you can rule out the switch and switch wiring as sources of the problem.”
Read the condition carefully: a click in each direction, not one click. The same guide uses the click as a power-present test — “If you can hear the relays make a click noise when you push the switch IN and OUT, then power is present.”

KFI Publishes a Decision Tree, With a Different Test
KFI’s contactor guide is the one document here that treats clicking as a named outcome and tells you where to go next. Its procedure is not the coil-terminal test above, and the preparation steps matter as much as the outcome. KFI first has you confirm supply — “Use the red and black post on the contactor to measure voltage” — and then, before any testing:
“3. If there are 12 volts going to the contactor and it is still not clicking, contactor testing can begin. To do this, unplug the green and black switch wires. Be sure the winch is in free spool before starting any testing.”
Only then does it energise anything, and it does so using the contactor’s own switch leads rather than a jumper: “take the black (OUT) wire (from the contactor) and touch it to the red post on the contactor”, then repeat with the green (IN) wire. Skipping the unplug step would put battery voltage back down a still-connected switch harness. The three outcomes:
“6. If the contactor clicks and the winch motor moves with both steps 4 and 5, the contactor is working properly. If the winch will not operate after the switch is reconnected, compare wiring to diagram on page 2. If wiring is correct, the switch is bad.”
“7. If the contactor clicks and the winch motor does not move, refer to: Winch Motor Troubleshooting Guide”
“8. If the contactor does not click and the winch motor does not move (or only works in one direction), try tapping contactor on the side of the housing. Then repeat steps 4 and 5.”
KFI’s clicking case sends you to the motor, which is where WARN’s causes 3 and 5 also land.
A Winch Manufacturer Does Publish a Voltage-Drop Limit
Most discussion of this question either offers no number or borrows one from elsewhere. ComeUp publishes a winch figure, and states it twice in its automotive winch guide:
“The voltage drop for the winch motor must not exceed 10% of the nominal voltage”
On a 12 V system that is 1.2 V, measured on the motor circuit. That is a winch manufacturer’s own limit and it is the one to use.
The figures more often quoted come from starter circuits:

One Click or Rapid Chattering?
These are different symptoms, and most sources use one word for both. A single click means the armature pulled in and stayed. Rapid chattering means it keeps pulling in and dropping out.
Do not lean too hard on that split, because none of the manufacturer documents read for this page has a chatter row separate from a click row. What they do publish is the battery path as a cause of the click-only symptom: WARN lists “Faulty battery, battery cable or battery cable connections” second of five for the clicking symptom itself. Champion files the battery under a different symptom — “Motor runs slowly or without normal power” — pairing “Insufficient current or voltage” with “The battery is weak, recharge. Run winch with vehicle motor running.”; under “Motor does not turn on” it names loose battery cable connections instead.
Don’t Confuse These
- A starter solenoid clicking is a different circuit on a different machine. The sound is the same and the advice does not transfer cleanly.
- A marine or sailboat winch shares the search term and little else; deck-winch and windlass results appear for these queries.
- A single click and a chatter are different symptoms, as above.
- No click at all is a different branch — KFI’s step 8, and the case where the switch, remote or control-side power is at fault.

Its automotive winch guide states, twice: "The voltage drop for the winch motor must not exceed 10% of the nominal voltage" — 1.2 V on a 12 V system, on the motor circuit. That is a winch manufacturer's own limit and it is the one to use. The figures more often quoted — roughly 0.3 V on the positive side, 0.2 V or less on the ground side, 0.5 V or 0.6 V total — are published for STARTER circuits: aa1car gives "The maximum allowable voltage drop including the solenoid or external relay in the starter circuit should be 0.6 volts or less", Fluke gives "Acceptable total drop: 0.2 to 0.5 V" in an article scoped to starter testing, and Delco Remy, a starter manufacturer, specifies "12-volt system: 0.500 volts maximum voltage loss". The technique transfers; those particular numbers were written for a different application.
